Coldest Night v0.8.0

Summary

This is a very minor update considering it took one and a half years, but that’s not exactly true. Development has been almost entirely put off, and I have only just got around to releasing my changes. This is because of me losing interest in the project, and because the scope was too big for me to finish it in an amount of time I’m happy with.

Changes

Version 0.8.0 features a graphical ‘overhaul’, if it can be called that. The walls are taller, one room features some actual windows, where guards would just be able to see through apparent walls before, and important objects have a thick black outline. Numbers should look nicer in the font too.

There are quite a few new settings. You can change the color scheme of the radar display, or you can hide it and just show vision cones in the world if you’re tired of staring at the corner of the screen.

Controller input is much less buggy thanks to finally being tested with an actual controller. The input mappings have more user-friendly names. You can finally map buttons without an analog pressure sensor. Sliders and option spinboxes no longer flail wildly when controlled with an analog stick.

Font size can be adjusted, and custom fonts can be loaded in. There is also an option for adjusting contrast.

Save files are now stored in plain JSON, and are more thoroughly validated. The splash screen and most of the dialogue has been stripped out to make the experience more snappy.

Future

What about the project’s future?

I mentioned the scope was too big. Hardly anything has been done for my idea of a big sprawling story with RPG mechanics, and I underestimated how long this would take to implement.

If the project does continue, it will almost certainly ‘pivot’. It will no longer be called a demo, it won’t be released commercially, and the title won’t relate to the game in any way. If this happens, I will focus on releasing packs of quick, standalone levels and adding to and refining the basic game mechanics.

This is probably quite a disappointing update, but I have found it to be a valuable experience.
